I-5 closure in Tacoma as police talk with suicidal man on overpass

September 13, 2017 02:41 PM

Tacoma police detained a suicidal man who had perched himself atop an Interstate 5 overpass Wednesday afternoon, which led to the freeway being closed down in both directions for about half an hour.

The man had been over the railing of the 84th Street overpass above I-5, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The Washington State Patrol closed the freeway at the 84th Street and 72nd Street overpasses about 2:30 p.m. At that time, 84th Street was also closed.

Tacoma police were able to talk the man down about 3 p.m., Cool said. He was taken into custody and taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

The freeway and road were both reopened shortly after.
