The recent editorial “The Legislature acts like it’s hiding something” is to the point. It shouldn’t take a lawsuit to make the legislature comply with the Public Records Act. It is time that the public and the press demand that the Legislature amend the law and remove the exemption it granted itself from the Public Records Act. This past legislative session, the state budget, which affects every resident of the state was negotiated in the dark of night, by the four members of the leadership from both parties, without input from other legislators or the public. This should never be allowed to happen again. A national newspaper has a tagline “Democracy Dies in Darkness.” It’s time to shine the light.
